What is containment?

The aim is to prevent dangerous substances from escaping from the production process (personal protection) or a product from being contaminated by foreign substances in the environment (product protection). The use of containment solutions serves to prevent contamination in three directions: that of the product by the user, the user by the product and cross-contamination between different products. This article is intended to give an insight into the world of containment and provide a better understanding.

Containment mainly takes place through the use of closed systems. Closed systems are machines and systems that are mainly used when hazardous substances are used. An essential prerequisite is that there must be no open connection between the environment and the system interior. In all cases, material leakage should be avoided. This also applies to any cleaning or maintenance. Interfaces, such as those that occur during sampling, filling, emptying and dosing, are particularly critical. In addition, handling should be as simple as possible so that no system interruptions are caused by user errors.

Personal protection: Protection of the user from substances that are hazardous to health

Product protection: Protection of the product from contamination and cross-contamination

Depending on the situation, critical needs for personal protection, product protection or both can be effectively achieved through the use of closed systems.

How do you measure containment effectiveness?

Containment efficiency is indicated by two classifications: OEB (Occupational Exposure Band) and OEL (Occupational Exposure Limit). The OEB specification describes the toxicity of the pure substance and the OEL the average exposure to the concentration of the active substance during an 8-hour shift on the staff.

Lugaia offers customers various safety concepts to ensure compliance with the required OEL values

What does containment look like in practice?

When looking at a system and its components, *containment" is primarily a question of interfaces or how to avoid them. Because every transition between one component and the next represents a potential leak point, choosing the right containment solution requires the type of experience and know-how Lugaia provides. The initial question is usually whether the process should be set up in the classic way in stainless steel or with single-use technology. In addition to rigid isolators and production requiring cleaning after each use, complete processes can also be set up with flexible film systems that are disposable. This can help you eliminate cleaning and validation costs.

One of the technical possibilities of containment are flexible single-use isolators

We realize potential customers have a choice of options when it comes to containment. Lugaia is in the business of providing the best possible containment solutions for each company's individual production. Our major goal is basically to keep the amount of substances escaping from the production plant as small as possible. This is to protect the health of your workers and integrity of your products.
